| In 1989, Governor Evan Bayh created The Governor's Commission For A Drug-Free Indiana to develop a comprehensive statewide approach to alcohol and other drug problems through advising the Governor and Indiana General Assembly on legislative strategies, mobilizing communities, and coordinating state efforts. Chaired by Attorney General Jeffery Modisett, a steering committee with members representing various areas of community (such as family, self-help, judiciary, etc.) guides the Commission. At a local level, the Commission calls on citizens to fight substance abuse in their own communities through local coordinating councils in each of the states 92 counties. | The Governor's Council on Impaired and Dangerous Driving joins the Commission and works to increase public safety in Indiana. Also led by a committee of community representatives, the Council primarily focuses on the issues involving traffic safety, including seat belt usage, impaired driving and traffic enforcement. The methods through which the Council achieves its goals include education, awareness, and enforcement activities. Volunteers throughout the state work together with local law enforcement to promote the Council's message and to make a positive impact on public safety in Indiana. |
